We’re delighted to continue with this Meet the Team series! We bring you members of the Star Trek Fleet Command team, and we ask them about their roles and favorite things about the game. Let’s warp in!
Meet our Senior QA Tester, Alannah!
Today we have one of our Senior QA Tester in the hot seat. So what’s your role inside the team?
As Senior tester for the live team, my tasks vary from supporting releases, debugging issues reported by our players and syncing the development on new quality of life improvements.
What do you find exciting about your job?
Release days are always exciting from the actual release of content to the player’s reactions (the good and the bad). Our players are very passionate and they are not afraid to share their thoughts, they can find some complex bugs that can be difficult to replicate in a test environment.
It’s always fun deep diving into these types of issues. Then just working with some of the most amazing people you will ever meet.
What kind of skills and experience are needed for your work? If you want to give any tips to someone interested in starting a career in the gaming industry.
For QA, you will need a keen key for detail, patience, and the ‘ability to think outside the box. Depending on the area of QA you want advanced in, you may need to increase your technical, analytic, or management skills.
There are many routes you can take to get into games or QA. It really depends on what’s available to you. I studied Multimedia Applications Development, which gave me knowledge across multiple disciplines.
After my studies, I went from interning with a small mobile game company to working in a large organization. Eventually, I secured a role with the STFC team. While working on STFC, I just continued to grow and develop my skills, which enabled me to reach my current position.
What is the thing that made you more proud on STFC? Something you’ve worked on.
The proudest moment for me was probably when the game was first released. Since then, we’ve introduced some amazing new features and content, but nothing compares to the day all our work was finally in the players’ hands. Since then, seeing how the game has grown and impacted the community is incredible. The release even made its way onto Irish TV!
Tell us about some Funny development moments that you remember.
Oh there’s so many!! When the research tree was in development, the assets were pictures of the team members working on it. That was pretty hilarious when it was first demoed to the rest of the company
If you were a Star Trek officer, who would you be and why?
Kathryn Janeway Greatest Captain EVER!! She is an absolute badass: “Now This Is How I Prefer The Borg. In Pieces!”
Saying that, I do love our in game Borg officers. If I couldn’t be captain I’d settle for being a Borg-ified tribble.
Thanks for your time with us today, Alannah!
Live Long and Prosper.
